Rediscovered Bach
“The organ is in my eyes and ears the king of all instruments.”
― Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Join us for an extraordinary evening as we celebrate a landmark moment in Baroque scholarship – new music by Bach! The magnificent Fritts-Richards baroque organ at St. Alphonsus will resound with two newly authenticated organ masterpieces by Johann Sebastian Bach: the Chaconne and Fugue in D minor, BWV 1178, and the Chaconne in G minor, BWV 1179.
These works were found in a manuscript (Ms II 3911 Mus) at the Royal Library of Belgium by Bach researcher Peter Wollny and were attributed to Bach just last year after years of research. Works for violin and organ by Bach and more will complete the program.
About the Fritts-Richards Organ
The glorious organ at St. Alphonsus was designed and built in the Fritts-Richards Organ Builders workshop located in Tacoma, Washington. The case and general tonal arrangement are crafted to match early Dutch and German organs, the historical peak in the instrument’s development. The case is directly inspired by the 16th-century organ of Hendrick Niehoff at Brouwershaven, The Netherlands.
